Controlled Atmosphere Cold Storage for Fruit and Vegetables
Controlled atmosphere cold storage lets fruit and vegetable operators keep their products fresh for longer and minimise storage losses. Fruit and vegetables continue to develop after harvest. In these rooms oxygen is lowered and carbon dioxide is kept at a set level, so the ageing of the product slows down without any chemicals.
How a Controlled Atmosphere Room Works
- The room is brought to the right temperature for the type of product.
- Oxygen (O2) is reduced to negligible levels.
- Ethylene (C2H4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) are absorbed inside the room with absorbers.
- Nitrogen (N) is supplied to the room by a nitrogen generator.
- No harmful chemicals are given to the product or the environment during these steps.
How the Room Is Made Gas-Tight
- Doors: Specially manufactured cold room doors
- Panel joints: Insulated with special chemicals for full sealing
- Floor and ceiling: Special sealing chemical applications, very different from normal cold rooms
- Inspection windows: Fitted to the door, wall or ceiling on request, so the product can be monitored
Benefits
- Storage time of apple, pomegranate, grape, pear and kiwi increases 2–3 times
- Product freshness is preserved and storage losses are minimised
- Helps prevent the reproduction and spread of diseases and bacteria
- Producers can market their product when it finds the best price
What Frigo System Offers
We offer complete solutions with insulation, ultrasonic humidification devices and appropriate humidity sensors. Our ultrasonic humidifiers produce droplets smaller than 1 micron, and the cold mist does not affect the efficiency of the refrigeration system.
