Frigo System supplies cold rooms to Kenya from Turkey: sandwich panels, cold room doors and refrigeration systems, shipped in containers and designed around your products and your site. We build cold rooms for fresh produce and export pack houses, freezer rooms and blast freezers for meat, poultry and fish, and complete cold stores. We have already exported to Kenya, two of our reference projects are there, and our local representative in the country installs and commissions cold rooms.

Our cold room projects in Kenya
Fresh fruit cold room in Nairobi (2024)
One room of 10 × 15 × 3 m, about 150 m² of floor area, for fresh fruit. We supplied it with cold room sandwich panels, a hinged door, a split refrigeration system with the evaporator inside and the condensing unit outside, a Dixell digital temperature controller and LED lighting. See the Nairobi project
Four freezer rooms and a cold room in Kenya (2025)
A cold storage block of five rooms built inside a hall: four freezer rooms and one cold room for chilled storage. We supplied the panels, evaporators and condensing units and shipped them to Kenya in containers. Installation and commissioning were carried out by our local representative in Kenya. See the five-room project

Elsewhere in East Africa we supplied a 22 × 17 × 4 m freezer store with a yogurt cold room and a chocolate cold room in Arusha, Tanzania. In Africa we have exported to Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, The Gambia and Senegal.

Storage conditions for Kenya’s main products
Most cold rooms in Kenya keep fresh produce for export and the local market, or meat, poultry, fish and dairy products. Each product needs its own temperature and humidity. The values below are typical storage conditions and approximate storage life from the product data of our cold room calculator, which is based on USDA Agriculture Handbook 66, UC Davis and FAO sources.
| Product | Temperature | Humidity | Storage life |
|---|---|---|---|
| Avocado (unripe) | 7 °C (3–13 °C, by variety and ripeness) | 85–95 % | 2–4 weeks |
| Mango (mature green) | 12 °C (10–13 °C) | 85–90 % | 2–4 weeks |
| French beans | 5 °C (4–7.5 °C) | 95–100 % | 7–12 days |
| Pineapple (ripe) | 7 °C (7–13 °C) | 85–95 % | 7–10 days |
| Banana (green) | 14 °C (13–15 °C) | 90–95 % | 1–4 weeks |
| Potato (late crop, cured) | 7 °C (4–10 °C) | 95–99 % | 5–10 months |
| Onion (dry) | 0 °C | 65–75 % | 1–9 months |
| Fresh fish | 0–4 °C, best at 0 °C in ice | – | 1–2 weeks, by species |
| Frozen meat, poultry and fish | –18 °C or colder | – | About 12 months for beef and poultry, 4–12 months for fish |
Avocados, mangoes, bananas and pineapples are damaged by temperatures below their range (chilling injury), so they should not share a room with vegetables kept near 0 °C. Separate rooms, or separate temperature zones, keep each product in its best conditions.
The calculator covers more than 30 fruits and 30 vegetables and gives the cooling load of your room. For more detail, see our pages on fruit and vegetable storage, potato cold storage conditions and onion cold storage.
Blast freezers and freezer rooms
For meat, poultry and fish processors we build blast freezer rooms that run at –35 to –40 °C with 200 mm PUR or PIR panels, followed by freezer storage at –18 °C or colder. Freezone (AF) units serve industrial plants, and Freezone Mini (AFM) units freeze 45 to 1,000 kg of product a day for smaller businesses. In our Sri Lanka project, the blast freezing room can freeze 3 tonnes of product to –20 °C in as little as 5 hours. See also fish cold storage and blast freezing and meat storage.
Planning a cold room in Kenya
- Climate: Nairobi and the highlands have a mild climate, while Mombasa and the coast are hot and humid. We size the condensing units for the summer temperature at your site, not for brochure conditions. More on this in our guide to high ambient condensing units.
- Power supply: Kenya’s mains supply is 415 V three-phase and 240 V single-phase at 50 Hz. Tell us what is available at your site.
- Products and intake: what you store, how much arrives each day and at what temperature. Fresh produce often needs forced-air pre-cooling before it goes into storage.
- Rooms and doors: separate rooms for products that need different temperatures, sliding doors for forklift traffic and high-speed PVC doors for busy entrances.
- Building: the rooms can stand inside an existing hall, as in our 2025 project in Kenya, or in a new building.
Delivery to Kenya: how an order works
- Quotation: ex works (EXW), or CIF to Mombasa with sea freight included.
- Payment: L/C or T/T, with terms agreed for each order.
- Production: 3–7 weeks on average, depending on the project.
- Packing: panels, doors and refrigeration units are packed at our factory and loaded into 40 ft containers. A cold store of about 600 m² fits in about 4–5 containers.
- Documents: commercial invoice, packing list, installation plan, user manual, certificate of origin, bill of lading and the required quality certificates. For Kenya we also obtain the PVoC Certificate of Conformity (CoC) required by KEBS.
- Installation: our team or our local representative in Kenya installs and commissions the cold store, or we send a supervisor to lead your local team.
- Warranty and spare parts: 1 year under standard terms; original spare parts are supplied within 3–5 days.
A CIF price does not include customs clearance, import duties or transport from the port to your site.
How much does a cold room cost in Kenya?
The price depends on the size, the temperature, the panel thickness, the doors, the refrigeration system and the installation. As a reference, a three-room frozen store of about 600 m² at –18 °C, like our project in Banjul, The Gambia, costs about €160,000 ex works today, with installation and commissioning included. Sea freight is added by country. Our cold room price guide explains the 10 factors that decide the cost.
Frequently asked questions
Do you deliver cold rooms to Kenya?
Yes. We have already exported to Kenya. Our projects there include a fresh fruit cold room in Nairobi (2024) and a block of four freezer rooms and one cold room (2025).
Who installs the cold room?
Our team or our local representative in Kenya installs and commissions the cold room, or we send a supervisor to lead your local team. Our representative installed and commissioned our 2025 project in Kenya.
How long does delivery to Kenya take?
Production takes 3–7 weeks on average, depending on the project. Sea transit to Mombasa comes on top of that.
Do you handle the KEBS PVoC certificate?
Yes. For shipments to Kenya we obtain the PVoC Certificate of Conformity (CoC) that the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) requires before shipment, and our products meet its requirements.
Will the cold room work in the heat on the coast?
Yes, when the condensing units are sized for it. We select them for the summer temperature at your site, so a cold room in Mombasa gets units for a higher outdoor temperature than one in Nairobi.
Do you have a representative in Kenya?
Yes, we have a local representative in Kenya who installs and commissions cold rooms. Requests from Kenya come to us, and we put you in touch with our representative.
